Screening, Assessments, and Tutoring
I offer two types of diagnostics - screenings and assessments.
A screening identifies children as young as 5 and a half who may be at risk for dyslexia. The screening identifies five risk levels, from very low risk to high risk. All children should be screened, ideally before age 7. If you are experiencing financial hardship, I will gladly do a screening for your child for free.
Assessments are more in depth and identify both risk level as well as strengths and weaknesses in the core skills needed for reading and spelling. I recommend an assessment for people with suspected or mild dyslexia to identify which core skills need to be developed, as well as ongoing assessments for more severe dyslexia to ensure tutoring or other interventions are actually helping the person make progress.
I do not diagnose dyslexia. Diagnosis is done by clinical psychologists who administer an intelligence audit (usually the WISC) and a reading test (usually the WIAT) and compare the scores. If there is a discrepancy between the two scores - i.e. someone has average or higher intelligence but can’t read well - they are diagnosed with dyslexia.
I offer private tutoring for students at all grade levels using the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Orton-Gillingham is a methodology that aims to meet dyslexic learners where they are with individualized lessons that engage student’s auditory, visual, and kinesthetic systems.
I also offer support for parent tutors with lesson planning and ongoing assessments to ensure student’s progress.
